- The three absolute must-avoid career crimes to solve so you stand out and step into the most fulfilling and best paying roles today
- A method of career change that has you skip the standard applicatiion, resume and interview process
- How to have dream jobs chasing after you rather than you chasing after them
Here are the 3 career crimes I’m going to uncover for you:
1) Why sending out your resume is the worst way to run your career
2) Why the best roles, the high-paying dream jobs, are hidden, and not currently available to you
3) Why people way less qualified than you are landing those jobs and you’re not
And just to be clear, there is absolutely nothing to buy here. At the end of this training, I’ll simply ask if you want to jump on a free call with me to discuss your career strategy if you think there’s a fit with what you need and what I can provide. Sound good?
My name is Darrell Gurney. I’ve advised executives and professionals around their careers for over 30 years. I speak and lead workshops for MBA programs such as Harvard, Wake Forest, and Tulane, I’ve written Amazon bestselling career books, and I'm #1 on Yelp for all of Los Angeles, the second largest city in the U.S.
OK, that’s me, so let’s get started. . .
Based on my 30 years of experience around professionals and their careers, you’re in one of 3 places right now. . .
1) You’re a professional, good at what you do, maybe even in the top 10% of your field. And you’re really good at it. Probably so good that you’ve never actually had to look for another job because opportunities just came to you, based on your connections or reputation.
However, now you’re feeling stuck in something that isn’t doing it for you anymore but you’re scared to make a move and risk throwing off a steady income just to be happier in your work. Maybe you’re already mentally unemployed and just going through the motions. Could be you’re in a job or field you’ve lost interest in or, heck, maybe the. . .
2) second place you’re currently in is out of work because of the current economic situation. Maybe your connections just aren’t delivering opportunities like they used to.
If that’s the case, you might even be feeling kinda worthless. The confidence you’ve usually had in yourself and your career might now seem a distant memory, and being unemployed has eaten away at your self-esteem. You may be anxious, confused, embarrassed and even feeling like a little like a failure. Not good feelings for a hugely valuable professional. Lastly. . .
3) the third place you could be in right now is somewhat content in your current career situation but, hey, if something really cool, like a dream opportunity, comes along, you’d definitely jump ship.
Regardless of which of these three places you might be – or somewhere in between – I have some straight answers for you.
Let me address each one of the career crimes I brought up a moment ago and how I’ve helped professionals and executives just like you stop those crimes from happening.
The first crime is that people send out resumes thinking that a resume can really set them apart from everyone else, that if they get their resume just perfect that somehow it will have them stand out and be noticed above others.
Sorry, but it ain’t gonna happen!
And, this is a problem because most of us were raised with the newspaper “classifieds” section, and that’s where we think to look for the best jobs available. Or, after newspapers, it was the online job boards that were going to give us access to the best roles.
Look, you’re not bad for thinking that. You probably just haven’t had the opportunity to learn otherwise. But thinking that you can put together that gravity-defying resume that’s just somehow going to float to the top of the pile of thousands, that’s just wishful thinking that a lot of folks still entertain.
The other problem with this belief in the power of a resume is that a resume gives you ZERO flexibility to move your career into other areas that may interest you NOW. A resume is based on your past and, therefore, you can only use a resume to do more of what you’ve done in the past.
That’s cool if you want to keep doing the same thing. But many professionals I’ve worked with who’ve spent 15, 20, 25 years in a certain field or profession find that they’d like to do something a little different, something more exciting, something more fulfilling in the next phase of their career.
When you base your job search on a resume, you’ll always be limited to doing what you’ve done before.
What’s the solution to that crime? A focused, strategic, research-based BACKDOOR campaign. Not only are you noticed and climb to being top of mind with influencers and hiring executives, but making entire career changes into new fields of interest is completely possible when you approach your job search in this way.
Take Joyce. She was a VP of Marketing with a major telecom company who reached out to me because she wanted to make a career move. She was convinced that her only option was to take another high-level marketing role in a similar telecom company. You see, people feel their hands are tied when they’ve been in a certain field and doing the same thing for so long. I call it “golden handcuffs.”
I told her that she wasn’t stuck in the same old thing if she began to think about her career differently, and do things differently than she had in the past.
FIRST RULE: THINK DIFFERENTLY, DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY
So, we worked together on first having her realize the unique skills, talents and value that she brought to everything she touched. People are often too close to the trees in their own lives to be able to see their own greatness. So, we did what I call a “Career Inventory” and she got to see her unique “essence” and that it was TRANSFERABLE, meaning she could transfer it into other fields even if she had no experience in those fields.
Then, we did a “Personal Branding” process that set her up to distinguish herself from every other Tom, Dick and Harriet out there. You see, everyone has a unique essence, and when you can put words to it and learn to speak it and convey it in your materials, you stand out from the crowd with your own personal brand.
After that, she learned the mindset and method behind what I call a “BACKDOOR Approach.” I basically taught her how point and click to get known and liked by folks in the areas she was passionate about: the influencers, the CEOs, the thought-leaders.
After 20-something years in corporate America, what really interested Joyce at this point in her life was her Jewish faith, but she couldn’t imagine how she could ever make the kind of money doing something in Judaism that she had made in a corporate role, nor how she could even get into the world of work in that field.
But, by using this BACKDOOR approach, she ended up meeting this person and then that one, who referred her to this one and that one, and she ended up becoming the Executive Director of a non-profit that trains bomb-sniffing dogs for Israel. Yeah. . .Really!
She was able to make the same high-level money she made in her corporate executive role, but now doing work that she really loved. She was able to get up every morning and look forward to her workday, knowing she was going to make a difference AND make good money. A big part of her life that had been a source of stress and confusion – her job -- now gave her access to joy on a daily basis. And, the best part is, she had a BALL in the process of landing this role because it simply involved talking to people in the fields she loved. Way more fun! Way less effort!
THAT is a major, backdoor, hidden-job market career shift she could have never made through the front door of applying for jobs.
So, to stop the crime of sending out your resume thinking it will have you stand out. . .just stop doing that!
Sure, have a good resume, and ideally one that is personally branded, but don’t rely on it. Instead, learn the BACKDOOR Approach to career transition. And, if you learn it and do it well, your resume simply becomes an afterthought, a leave-behind. It’s the relationships you develop that open the doors, and the resume is simply paperwork, like other necessary paperwork, that has to be dealt with when you begin a new and way more exciting job.
BTW, if you’ve already learned enough and want to jump on a call with me, then click the schedule button above or below.
If you want to learn more, let’s keep going. We have two more crimes to solve.
Now, for crime number two, how come the best roles, the high-paying dream jobs, are hidden, and not currently available to you?
Simple. Because 80% of all jobs are filled before they’re ever advertised, and that DEFINITELY goes for those juiciest, high-paying dream jobs.
If you’re like 97% of job seekers, you’re only hearing about the posted or “open” positions listed on the job boards like Indeed or executive job listing sites. And look, lots of “open” positions are not really even open because they may already know who they want for the role but need to post it for HR compliance reasons. Even the roles you hear about through recruiters are known widely enough to have lots of competition already.
You, like me and many others, were raised with a mentality to go see what jobs are available and apply for them. But the reason 80% get filled before they’re ever posted is because people in those organizations know other people, and people always want to work with people they already know and like. So those people that are connected hear about the roles from their friends before they’re ever advertised and snap up those roles first. It’s called the “hidden job market.”
And guess what? A lot of those folks gaining entryway to those sweetheart roles are a lot less qualified than you. But they’re getting them before you – the third crime I mentioned – because they are in tight with the insiders. Hey, it sucks, but you can’t deny that old phrase, “it’s not what you know but who you know.”
Look, I’m not an advocate for unqualified people getting into the best roles. But to overcome these last two crimes being perpetrated on you, you have to get connected to the insiders. So, the. . .
SECOND RULE: GET DEEPLY CONNECTED TO THE PLAYERS IN THE FIELDS YOU’RE INTERESTED IN
And, I’ll go ahead and tell you now, the. . .
THIRD RULE: CONNECT THROUGH RESEARCH!
For you to be privy to the high-paying dream jobs, you want to learn how to launch a campaign to be known and liked by the folks who are already in the influential roles in your areas of interest, the ones who make the decisions, the ones with sway over the roles to be filled.
And, with you being way more qualified than others in those inside circles, you end up in the roles before those less qualified than you do.
Take, for example, Sundar. Sundar was a highly paid Chief Operating Officer of an $80M division of a Fortune 500 company. He’d been with the company 20 years and, at this point, was bored stiff. The organization was hierarchical and stuffy, and they were dealing with old world technology. He was interested in things on the cutting edge, like Artificial Intelligence, Driverless Cars, 3-D Printing and things like that. He was looking for more fulfillment in his work and wanted to make a change, but had to play things close to his chest given his responsibilities. He definitely wasn’t going to be sending out resumes.
We worked together, again, first in giving him a mile-high view of his unique and transferable value through a Career Inventory process, and then in identifying his Personal, one-of-a-kind Brand. Lastly, he learned how to use this BACKDOOR approach of career transition to get out and in front of the movers and shakers in these areas of cutting-edge technology.
Through connecting with people NOT because he needed a new job but strictly for RESEARCH PURPOSES – engaging with the thought-leaders around these new, cutting-edge technologies – he ended up getting connected through back channels to the highest level decision-makers in these fields.
In the end, after a wildly fun and interesting BACKDOOR CAMPAIGN of research and connecting, he was offered a role as a – now, you gotta listen close on this – he’s a Chief Delegate to the World Economic Forum for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Yeah, so up in the San Francisco Bay Area, there’s an organization much like the United Nations, where major countries and corporations each send delegates to work together to ACTUALLY DESIGN THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. And he’s a Fellow there, specializing in Artificial Intelligence.
Now, tell me, who gets those Dream Jobs through the old methods of resumes and interviewing. NOBODY.
He’s a really mild-mannered guy. See the video above to hear what he had to say about this method and the work we did together.
And, even on top of getting this incredible job of his dreams, through my support in his salary negotiations, he ended up with a 30% increase over his last salary.
Now, if you’ve realized that trying to manage your career through the FRONT DOOR of resumes and interviewing is just never going to get you the types of roles that make you jump out of bed in the morning, nor the kind of money that you really deserve to feel good about yourself and your value, I suggest you click the Schedule button below.
I'll offer you some clarity on how you can think and do things differently than you have in the past, and differently than 98% of job seekers out there.
Here is what other career advisors will say to solve these problems. . .
- They tell you to get on LinkedIn and find people who work at the companies you want to work for and reach out to them so as to get a foot in the door.
Problem is, that is asking for a job and looking like you need a job, which just puts you back in the front-door side of things.
- Or, they’ll tell you to do “informational interviews” which, in effect, is telling everyone the same thing: you need a job. Anyone who ever hears that term knows somebody is looking for a job.
No, this old thinking and old ways of doing things doesn’t work.
Your option is to get on a call with me to see if. . .
-
You have the mindset capable of discovering and owning your personal brand
-
You have interests in expanding your career into new areas and dimensions
-
You have the capacity for launching a BACKDOOR research-based campaign
The reason why we need to get on a call is your career is unique. There is no way I can determine if what you do now and what you want in your career future is translatable. So, let’s figure that out together.
By the way, everyone in the videos below jumped on a called and we started to work together in the same way. Check out what they had to say.
Look, here are 3 things that you need these days to be successful as an executive in transition:
- A clear and deep understanding of the unique value you bring to every company, situation and project you touch.
- A distinct, personal brand by which you put yourself forth in the world, separate and independent from any particular company you work for
- And a proven Backdoor approach that has you able to form trusted and known relationships with the highest level thought-leaders and CEOs in your areas of fascination.
If you jump on a call with me, I’ll show you how what I’ve described as the way to manage your career will net you more money, more fulfillment and, frankly, more fun than you could have ever imagined in a career change.
I look forward to speaking with you. Click the Schedule button below and set up a call on the best day and time that suits you.
